Aussie Doodle Characteristics

The Aussie Doodle, also known as the "Einstein breed" for their smarts, is an intelligent crossbreed between the Australian Shepherd and Poodle. These Hybrid pups inherited some of the best qualities from both of their parents. The  size of the Aussie Doodle varies based on the size of the parents. Here at Ruby River Aussie Doodles, we offer the Mini size.  We have found that the mini size is perfect for apartment living and are just easier to manage.  You can just pick them up and take them anywhere!  They are very smart, playful, loyal and eager to please, which makes them a great breed for families with children. These dogs are renowned for their intelligence, and need positive-reinforcement and task oriented playing to thrive. They are also a low allergen breed, making them a great choice to families with dog allergies.  And, my favorite characteristic is that due to the poodle gene, they are low shedding!

Hypoallergenic and less Shedding

The term “hypoallergenic,” which simply means that a particular dog or breed of dogs (in this case Poodles/Doodles) is less likely to cause allergies. I think it is fairly common knowledge that the English prefix “hypo” means “less than” or “under.” for example....Hypothermia is when someone is extremely cold due to a less than normal body temperature.  People with hypoglycemia have low blood sugar.  Hypoxia is a person who has less than a normal amount of oxygen reaching their tissue. So, regarding the term “hypoallergenic,” we are quick to tell people that no dog is non-allergenic, and they should interact with a pup to see if their allergies respond negatively.

Originally used in 1953 to describe cosmetics that were less likely to cause allergic reactions, the term “hypoallergenic” is still used in the cosmetics world, and is used for dogs that are less likely to cause allergic reactions. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that low-shedding or non-shedding breeds are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Again, this is different than saying non-allergenic. It’s impossible to make a 100% foolproof promise, because some people are allergic to dog saliva. Or they’re allergic to grass, and when their Doodle plays in the grass, then comes inside they have a reaction.

Aussie Doodles are an active breed

Aussie Doodles require exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom which often leads to getting into trouble. Enrichment toys and games are a wonderful addition to play time and help to eliminate the boredom for these highly intelligent dogs!  They will do well in any living situation provided that their needs are sufficiently met. They will do best if given daily walks and playtime. Most Aussie Doodles enjoy swimming, going on hikes, and excel in agility. Aussie Doodles have a medium energy level and are best for those who live a moderately active lifestyle.

Aussie Doodle Training

Aussie Doodles are extremely smart and eager to please. Training must be done with rewards, firmness, patience and consistency. Both of the breeds used to create the Aussie Doodle, are considered to be canine Einsteins, making this one super smart cross-breed. Basic training such as "sit", "come", "stay" etc. should start as soon as you take your Aussie Doodle home to insure your puppy starts off on the right foot. It is important to crate train your Aussie Doodle when they are young so that they don't become destructive in your home and are reliable with potty training. It will make unexpected Vet visits less stressful for them as well.
